The Future of PrEP is Now!

New “long-acting” forms of PrEP such as injections, implants, and new types of oral pills are being evaluated in clinical trials, and may soon be available in Canada. Rather than having to take a pill on a daily or “on demand” basis, “long-acting” PrEP could involve injections every 2 months, while offering protection. Oral PrEP has proven to be an effective tool for HIV prevention, but emerging studies show a new long-acting injectable option as being just as, and potentially more effective.

Long-acting cabotegravir (CAB-LA) has already received regulatory approval in Canada for use as HIV treatment, and is being evaluated in clinical trials for use as long-acting PrEP. To better understand potential community needs & preferences for long-acting PrEP, The Future of PrEP is Now research project is launching a series of online focus groups with Two-Spirit, gay, bisexual, queer, and other men who have sex with men, including trans men & non-binary people (2SGBQM). La PrEP à action prolongée sera bientôt disponible au Canada. De nouvelles formes d’injections, d’implants et de comprimés sont en essais cliniques. La PrEP à action prolongée, qui pourraient être une injection tous les deux mois, remplacerait le comprimé à prise en continu ou à prise intermittente. La PrEP sous forme de comprimés a démontré son efficacité pour empêcher la transmission du VIH, les nouvelles études démontrent toutefois que les injections seraient tout autant, sinon plus efficaces que les comprimés quotidiens.

Le cabotégravir (CAB-LA) a déjà été approuvé au Canada comme traitement antirétroviral et il est à l'étude clinique pour évaluer son utilisation comme PrEP à action prolongée.
